Have you ever come across an online listing of the card to the right? It is identical in every way to the normal 1989-90 Hoops Michael Jordan card only instead of a white background this card has a yellow background.
It is often advertised as extremely rare and therefore highly valuable. This is more or less true however I personally don't place a higher value on this card.
For the 1989-90 season Hoops manufactured and released two identical sets - one with white, the other with yellow backgrounds.
The white set was distributed among all the usual channels.
The yellow set was available only through Sears department stores under a special agreement between Hoops and Sears.
So in actual fact it was the entire 89-90 Hoops set which was available with this yellow background - not just the Jordan card.
As a result of the exclusive deal with Sears, I imagine the print run of the yellow cards would have been considerably lower. However it doesn't feel like a special rarity to me. In fact this isn't a card I would add to my collection let alone pay a higher price for.
Each to his own though - what do you all think?
